A supplier certificate that states a coating class is a starting point, not a conclusion. A coil can look bright, uniform, and correct while the coating is thinner than the specification, which is why the buyer needs a measurement path rather than a glance. Appearance is a screening step, never the final check.

The agreed coating class is the reference point

Every coating verification starts from the coating specification agreed with the supplier and written into the purchase order. That agreement names the coating class and the test method that defines it, and it is the only thing a buyer measures against. A buyer who measures thickness without a written reference point is collecting numbers with nothing to judge them by.

A certificate that names a different class, a different method, or no lot at all is a flag, not necessarily a failure — but it is the point where the buyer asks the supplier to reconcile the document with the order before any material is accepted. The certificate is evidence, and like any evidence it has to match the claim it is supporting.

Measurement methods as verification tools

Two measurement approaches are commonly available, and they answer different questions.

A magnetic thickness gauge reads the coating thickness on the surface of a finished nail. It is a fast, non-destructive check that works well for screening a batch, and it is the practical receiving-side tool when the coating is magnetic and the method is appropriate to the finish. The gauge measures the coating over the base metal, and the reading is compared against the agreed coating class.

Cross-section measurement cuts a nail, polishes the section, and measures the coating layer directly under magnification. It is slower and destructive, but it shows the coating structure in a way a surface gauge cannot, and it is the method a buyer turns to when the surface readings are disputed or when the coating has to be characterized for a formal claim.

Neither method is a magic answer by itself. The buyer confirms which method the coating class was defined against, and measures with a method that can be compared to that definition. Coating thickness varies across a production run, so a single nail from a single carton cannot stand for the whole delivery. The goal is a spread of readings, not one heroic number. A lot where every sampled nail sits comfortably inside the agreed range is a different result from a lot where half the readings fall short. The sampling record, with its lot number and carton positions, is what lets the buyer state the extent of any shortfall instead of guessing.

Appearance versus measured thickness

Appearance and measurement answer different questions, and a buyer keeps them apart. A dull or patchy finish is an appearance observation that may or may not mean the coating is thin; a gauge reading is a measurement that says what the coating thickness actually is. The two can agree, and they can disagree.

When they disagree, the measurement is the tiebreaker for the specification, while the appearance stays as a separate observation for the record. A coating that measures inside the agreed range but looks inconsistent is worth noting for the supplier, but it is not automatically a nonconformance unless the appearance itself was part of the agreement. Keeping the two separate prevents a buyer from rejecting a conforming lot on looks, or accepting a short lot because it happens to look fine.

When the records disagree

The moment to stop and sort things out is when the certificate, the sample measurement, and the receiving measurement fail to line up. Before anyone calls the lot good or bad, the buyer confirms three things: that the certificate and the measurements reference the same coating class, that they used the same or comparable test methods, and that they covered the same lot. A disagreement that survives that check is a supplier question, with the retained samples and the written records as the evidence.
