A produce bag does not present the same closure every time. Mesh gauge, drawstring, label strip, product fill and the number of folds all change the gathered neck that the ring must capture. Selecting a hog ring from the empty bag alone can produce a closure that looks acceptable on the bench but slips, cuts the mesh or cannot be reached consistently on the packing line.
O C17 and C24 hog-ring product page lists both families with 1.60 mm wire. C17 is 16.9 mm wide by 8.7 mm high and is paired with the SC760B tool for clamped-material diameters of 3.2–4.8 mm. C24 is 24 mm wide by 12 mm high; SC7C covers 4.8–8.0 mm and SC7E covers 7.8–10 mm. Those ranges define a starting point. The filled bag, gathered neck and closure result still need a real trial.
Build the Trial Around the Filled Bag
Prepare samples using the actual mesh construction, bag size, label or drawstring components and intended fill. Include the lightest and heaviest approved pack conditions. Gather the neck using the proposed production method, then measure the bundle where the ring will close. Keep the smallest and largest readings rather than reporting one average.
Mark any knot, seam, label edge or folded reinforcement that enters the closure. A bundle can measure within a tool range while still presenting an uneven shape that pushes the ring off centre. Photograph the bundle from two directions and tie the image to the bag SKU and fill condition.

Match the Ring and SC-Series Tool
Label every ring sample with family, material, finish and lot. Pair C17 with SC760B and C24 with SC7C or SC7E according to the published clamped-material ranges. Keep the tool model, nose condition, approved air setting and fixture in the same trial record. Similar-looking strips are not a reason to interchange tools.
Approach the gathered neck at the same angle the operator will use on the line. Record whether the tool nose can seat squarely without forcing fingers into the closure zone or twisting the bag. If the intended conveyor, chute or bag support changes access, reproduce that condition before approval.
Run enough samples to include normal bundle variation. Separate feed consistency from closure quality: a feed interruption belongs to the tool-and-ring record, while mesh cutting, product leakage, a loose neck or an off-centre ring belongs to the bag-joint record.
Inspect the Closure and the Pack-Out
Check that the closed ring captures the intended mesh and any approved drawstring or label component without cutting individual strands. Record open gap, overlap, twist and the final position relative to the gathered neck. Avoid a universal pass dimension; the accepted closure belongs to the approved bag, fill, ring and tool combination.
Use the retained closure-sample method to preserve accepted and rejected examples. Add packaging-specific checks: handling during case packing, contact with adjacent bags, label readability, carton fit and any customer-defined transport trial. Performance thresholds should come from the responsible buyer's packaging plan.
Retain the original photographs and sample IDs. If mesh supplier, bag size, fill weight, label material, ring finish or tool changes, reopen the affected part of the trial instead of extending approval by assumption.
Release One Traceable Combination
The release sheet should name the bag SKU, mesh construction, fill range, gathered-neck range, C17 or C24 family, finish, tool model, setup, accepted closure and pack-out check. State which variations are excluded. This gives purchasing a precise RFQ and gives production a repeatable line setup.
Galvanized and stainless versions are listed, but exposure and corrosion requirements remain a buyer decision. Bind the selected material to the order rather than treating it as a generic substitute.
