"Bright" and "galvanized" are the two words a coil nail buyer sees most often on quotation sheets, and they are easy to treat as a minor line item. They are not minor.   • Price. No coating step means a lower manufacturing cost, and for high-volume pallet and crate orders the difference adds up across a container.
  • Appearance. The surface is bright and even when new, which can look cleaner than a coated nail in the carton.
  • Corrosion behavior. Because the steel surface is exposed, any moisture — condensation, humidity, liquid water, damp wood — will begin surface rust. That is the expected behavior of uncoated carbon steel, not a defect in a particular batch.

The word "bright" should always appear explicitly on the order. If a quotation simply says "coil nails" with no finish stated, the supplier may default to bright or to a coating, and the receiving team has no basis to check either way. A finish that was never specified cannot be disputed later.

When Galvanized Is the Right Call

  • Outdoor storage of pallets, crates or finished goods, even temporarily.
  • Damp production environments — unheated plants, humid regions, or processes where wood arrives wet.

  • Assuming the finish is "standard." There is no universal default. If the finish is not written on the order, treat it as unspecified.

  2. Describe the exposure. Indoor dry assembly, export with sea transit, outdoor storage, reused goods. This is the information that lets the supplier confirm or challenge the choice.
