A coil nailer model should be selected around one confirmed fastener and one real production task—not around the largest nail length in a brochure. CN55, CN65B, CN70B, CN80B, CN90 and CN100B overlap in some areas, but their nail envelopes, pressure bands, inlets and tool weights differ. Moving up the model list can therefore change the air-system and handling plan without improving the joint.
The practical method is to freeze the nail specification first, shortlist only tools whose complete published envelope contains it, and then approve the tool with the intended workpiece and air supply. The matrix below is a screening tool. The supplier's current manual, quotation and labelled trial unit remain the approval record.

Put the Six Models on One Comparable Sheet
The current CN-series pneumatic coil nailer range lists the following values. Nail head and wire diameter matter just as much as length: a nail inside the length band can still be outside the tool's other published limits.

Avoid splicing values from different rows into a hypothetical combination. For example, the CN65B row reaches 65 mm and 3.3 mm wire, while the CN80B row reaches 83 mm but lists a 2.9 mm maximum wire. A buyer who only asks for “the larger tool” may miss that boundary.
Start With the Exact Coil Nail
Create one fastener line with nail length, wire diameter, head diameter, shank form, point, collation angle and type, coating, nails per coil and roll outside diameter. Add the intended base material and joint. If any of those fields is unknown, obtain the actual nail drawing and labelled sample before selecting a tool.
That step prevents three common errors. First, a nominal length match can hide an incompatible head or wire diameter. Second, a coil count alone does not prove that the roll fits the magazine. Third, the same dimensional nail may behave differently when its collation, coating or shank changes.

Shortlist by the Complete Envelope
Mark each tool PASS, FAIL or OPEN against every nail field. A model is not shortlisted until length, wire, head and coil format all pass. The overlap bands are useful only after this complete-envelope review.
For a 55 mm nail, for example, several rows may pass the length check. That does not make them equivalent. A 2.2 mm wire fits the CN55's listed band but falls below the CN65B, CN70B and CN80B listed minimum of 2.3 mm. Conversely, a 3.1 mm wire is outside CN55, CN70B and CN80B, even though its length might fit. The CN65B may remain a candidate, but only if the head and coil fields also match.
At the upper end, CN90 and CN100B share the listed 2.5–3.3 mm wire band, 6.5–7.5 mm head band, 225–300 coil capacity, 115–145 PSI pressure band and 3/8 NPT inlet. Their published length ranges and weights differ. A 95 mm nail points to CN100B from this six-model list, but that still requires exact fastener and workpiece approval.
Treat Pressure and Inlet as Project Interfaces
CN55 through CN80B list 85–120 PSI and a 1/4 NPT inlet. CN90 and CN100B list 115–145 PSI and a 3/8 NPT inlet. This is not a minor accessory difference. The plant must check whether the compressor, regulator, hose, couplings and branch line can provide the selected tool's required conditions at the work position during actual cycling.
Air consumption, hose diameter, compressor size and production rate cannot be inferred from the pressure number. Those values are not established by this comparison. Ask for the current manual and model-specific air-demand information, then let a qualified air-system person check pressure loss and capacity for the intended duty cycle.
The RFQ should name the inlet standard explicitly. “Standard fitting” is not enough when different model rows list 1/4 NPT and 3/8 NPT. Record any adapter separately, verify its rating and make sure it does not become an unreviewed restriction or handling interference.
Compare Handling Without Calling Heavier Better
The listed weights rise from 2.75 kg for CN55 to 5.67 kg for CN100B. Weight can affect lifting, balance, hose management, support methods and operator fatigue, but the catalogue figure alone cannot set an acceptable shift pattern. The actual task frequency, fastener load, work height, orientation and workstation layout all matter.
Use the lightest shortlisted model only after compatibility and trial results pass; forcing a small tool outside its envelope to save weight is unacceptable. Equally, CN100B is not justified for a short, light nail merely because it has the widest published length range. Have the responsible safety and production teams review the complete loaded tool in the real posture.

Run a Labelled Sample Trial
The trial should connect one labelled tool, one nail lot, one air setup and one workpiece lot. Record model and serial number, nail drawing and lot, regulator setting, hose and coupling setup, base material, joint stack, drive orientation and trial date. Follow the manufacturer's current operating and safety manual.
Inspect loading and feeding before evaluating the joint. Look for consistent coil seating, free magazine movement, nail advance and collation discharge. During the controlled drive test, record proud or overdriven heads, bending, splitting, surface damage, feed interruptions, jams and any adjustment. The project owner defines the joint acceptance criteria; a visually flush head is not universal proof of joint performance.
When two models pass, compare them under the same documented conditions. Changing the nail, regulator, hose or workpiece between trials destroys the comparison. Retain sample joints and photos with the approval sheet.
Normalize Supplier Returns
Ask every supplier to return the same evidence matrix:

This makes a CN65B quotation comparable with a CN80B quotation without pretending the models are interchangeable. It also exposes open fields before purchase.
Send an RFQ That Can Be Approved
Submit the nail drawing, representative coil and workpiece description with the target production rate and air connection. If more than one model fits, request a line-by-line reason for each option.
The useful decision is not “CN55 or CN100B?” in isolation. It is “which labelled CN model passes this nail envelope, this air interface, this handling review and this joint trial with the fewest open assumptions?” That record can then follow the purchase order, incoming inspection and future nail changes.
