A buyer asking for “galvanized big-head coil nails” has not yet defined a purchasable finish. The current Fastener Nails product record lists three different galvanized constructions for this large-head family: yellow-chromate electro-galvanizing, hot-dip galvanizing at 44 micrometres, and mechanical galvanizing at 12 micrometres. It also lists carbon-steel and 304 stainless-steel material options.
Those are distinct order lines. The finish must stay connected to the 9–10 mm head, 3.05 ± 0.1 mm wire, selected length, 14–16 degree coil and 120-piece collation. A generic coating name separated from the nail drawing creates room for a wrong but visually similar delivery.

The Published Finish Options Are Specific, Not Interchangeable
The exact big-head coil nails product page publishes the following family-level evidence.

The 44 and 12 micrometre values are product specifications, not service-life conversions. Exposure duration depends on the complete assembly, environment, handling, coating continuity and acceptance method. A buyer can quote the published thickness; the buyer cannot turn that number into a guaranteed number of outdoor years without separate evidence.

Freeze the Nail Before Comparing Its Surface
Finish selection is meaningful only when the base nail is stable. The product record lists a 9.0–10.0 mm head diameter, 0.7–0.9 mm head thickness, 3.05 ± 0.1 mm wire diameter, a 40–67 degree diamond point and lengths from 22.2 to 51 mm. The wire-collated coil is listed at 14–16 degrees with 120 nails per coil.

Put those values on the same drawing revision as the finish. Otherwise one sample may differ in length, head, point or collation while the team believes it is comparing only the coating.
A controlled comparison record should include:
- product family: big-head coil nails;
- base material: listed carbon steel or 304 stainless steel;
- nail length, wire diameter, head diameter and head thickness;
- point type and accepted point-angle range;
- 14–16 degree collation and 120 nails per coil;
- selected finish and published nominal thickness where applicable;
- intended workpiece and actual nailer used for the trial;
- sample code, lot code and drawing revision.
The large head is a functional geometry for resistance to pull-through in relevant pallet, roofing and wood applications. A finish change does not replace the head and joint review.
How to Compare the Three Galvanized Choices
Yellow-chromate electro-galvanizing
Use the exact product wording in the RFQ and request a current sample. The public record identifies the finish but does not publish a coating-thickness number for this option. If thickness, appearance range or a test standard matters, name the required evidence rather than filling in a value from another product family.
Colour is useful for sample identification, but colour alone is not proof of coating process or coating thickness. Tie the sample to a material declaration, drawing and supplier lot.
44 micrometre hot-dip galvanizing
The published 44 micrometre value makes this option easier to specify, yet it still needs an acceptance plan. Agree whether the value is nominal or minimum, which measurement method applies, how many nails are sampled, and which areas of the head and shank are measured. A single reading on one convenient surface cannot describe an entire production lot.
The RFQ should also define whether weld and collation areas receive a visual continuity check. This is a request for observed evidence, not a promise of a particular outdoor lifetime.
12 micrometre mechanical galvanizing
The published 12 micrometre value identifies a separate construction. Keep it on its own quotation row even when the nail dimensions match the hot-dip option. Ask for the same measurement and sampling definitions so the two quotations can be compared on an equal basis.
Mechanical galvanizing should not be shortened to “galvanized” on the carton label. The full finish name and drawing revision protect receiving teams from mixing it with electro-galvanized or hot-dip stock.
Use a Measurement Plan, Not a Colour Ranking

A practical pre-production approval has four separate layers.
- Identity check. Confirm family, drawing, length, wire, head, point, collation and finish name.
- Coating evidence. Record the supplier declaration and agreed measurement result for the selected option.
- Feed and drive trial. Run the sample through the intended nailer and workpiece. Record feed, head seating, visible damage and rejected pieces.
- Retained comparison. Keep a labelled sample and approval record that can be compared with the first production lot.
The caliper image in this article supports head-identity checking; it is not a coating-thickness test. Coating thickness requires a suitable agreed method and competent measurement.
Build Quotation Rows That Cannot Be Silently Substituted
Avoid one line that reads “big head coil nails, galvanized.” Use a complete row such as:
Big-head coil nail / carbon steel / specified length / 3.05 ± 0.1 mm wire / 9.0–10.0 mm head / 14–16 degree wire coil / 120 pieces per coil / hot-dip galvanized 44 micrometres / drawing revision / packing requirement.
Then add the evidence and sample fields below it. If the buyer requests two finishes, create two order lines and two sample codes. This matters when quotations are normalized: a lower price may reflect a different coating construction rather than a supplier advantage.
Also state whether alternative material, finish, thickness, appearance or packing requires written approval. “Equivalent” is not a measurable substitution rule.
Receiving Checks for the First Production Lot
At receipt, reconcile the purchase order, supplier declaration, carton label and retained sample before the coils reach production. Sample across cartons and pallets according to the agreed plan. Check nail geometry, finish identity, label accuracy, visible continuity, coil condition and the agreed coating evidence.
If the colour differs but all documents match, record the variation and review it against the approved appearance boundary. If the finish name, material or thickness evidence differs, segregate the lot. A production trial cannot turn an undocumented finish substitution into an accepted specification.
Send a Finish-Specific RFQ
For a usable quotation, send the big-head nail drawing, length, workpiece, nailer, required finish, coating-thickness evidence, sampling plan, packing and destination. Fastener Nails can then quote the exact listed construction and prepare a labelled sample against the same order row.
The decision is not simply whether hot-dip or mechanical galvanizing is “better.” It is whether the published 44 micrometre, 12 micrometre or electro-galvanized option matches the buyer's documented application and acceptance plan.
