Coil nail length for pallets cannot be selected from deckboard thickness alone. The nail passes through the deckboard, enters a stringer or block, and has to seat correctly under the actual nailer setup. Wood species, moisture condition, joint geometry, shank, point, and production settings can all change the result. A useful specification therefore starts with the joint and ends with a controlled sample trial.<\/p>\n

Start With the Joint, Not the Nail Catalogue<\/h2>\n

A request for "pallet coil nails" leaves the main engineering question unanswered: which two wooden members are being joined? A top deckboard fixed to a stringer is different from a thin component attached near an edge, and a repair operation may present old holes, damaged fibers, or uneven surfaces that new assembly does not.<\/p>\n

Record the thickness of the first member, the thickness and orientation of the receiving member, and any place where the nail could approach an exposed surface. The purpose is to understand the available path. A longer nail may create more engagement, yet excessive length can introduce unwanted point exposure, interference with another joint, or a change in how the point behaves near an edge. A shorter nail may seat neatly while leaving too little engagement for the intended joint.<\/p>\n

This is also the point to identify whether the pallet design, customer drawing, or existing approved sample already controls the fastener. When a specification is already qualified for a particular pallet, changing length merely to reduce price creates a different joint and deserves a new trial.<\/p>\n

Nominal Length Is Only One Part of Effective Penetration<\/h2>\n

Nominal nail length is measured on the fastener. Effective penetration is what remains after the nail passes through the first board and seats at the chosen depth. Those values are related, but they are not interchangeable.<\/p>\n
