C Hog Rings for Mattress Border-Wire Assembly: Diameter, Tool Access, and Closure Trial

A mattress plant should not approve a C-ring order from the words “mattress use” alone. The ring closes around a specific bundle: border wire, spring or connecting element, and any other layer caught at that joint. Change the bundle diameter or the way the tool reaches it, and the same ring can close differently.

The purchasing decision is therefore a system decision. Define the joint, measure the captured stack, identify the forming tool, and approve closures made at the most difficult production locations. Only then should the ring, tool, and joint revision be released as one controlled combination.

Start With the Joint, Not the Ring Name

Build a one-page joint record before comparing C17 and C24. Give the connection a location code and sketch which parts the ring must capture. Record the nominal wire diameters, the number of elements inside the ring, their orientation, and any fabric or attachment material that must remain clear of the closing path.

Measure the assembled bundle at the fastening point, not each loose component in isolation. A pair of round wires can present a different capture envelope when they cross, sit side by side, or are held at an angle. If the plant has several border-wire joints, measure each joint family separately instead of assuming one maximum represents every position.

The supplier's C hog rings and C-ring fastener range lists both C17 and C24. The page records 1.60 mm wire for both rings, but their open dimensions and tool paths differ. That makes the measured joint the useful starting point; “15 gauge” by itself does not identify the finished system.

Use the Listed Ranges as a Screening Check

The documented C17 ring is 16.9 mm wide by 8.7 mm high and is paired with the SC760B tool for a stated 3.2-4.8 mm clamped-material range. C24 is 24 mm wide by 12 mm high. Its listed tool paths are SC7C for 4.8-8.0 mm and SC7E for 7.8-10 mm.

These figures only screen the candidate; approval still depends on the real mattress joint. A measured bundle close to a range boundary deserves particular attention because wire position, tool angle, and production variation can change the way the ring captures and closes. If the measured value falls between tool ranges or varies substantially by joint position, send representative samples and photographs to the ring and tool supplier before choosing.

It is not evidence that every mattress border-wire connection should use C24. The factory's joint sample and the tool's documented range control the release.

Treat the Ring and Pneumatic Tool as One System

The tool does more than hold the fastener. Its nose must locate around the joint, retain the ring correctly, and form a repeatable closure without forcing the operator into an unstable angle. A C17 ring specified with an SC7C tool, or a C24 ring specified only as “for a hog ring gun,” is an incomplete purchase description.

Add these fields to the trial sheet:

  • ring code and measured open dimensions;
  • ring material or finish;
  • tool model and serial or asset ID;
  • magazine and feed condition;
  • air-supply condition and tool setting used for the approved sample;
  • joint code, component diameters, and orientation;
  • operator position and access direction;
  • ring-lot and sample identifiers.

Test the Hardest Access Points First

A comfortable bench coupon can hide a production problem. Select sample locations that represent the tightest nose clearance, the least convenient approach angle, and the greatest joint variation on the mattress assembly. If the same ring is proposed for a straight section and a corner, keep the results separate.

At each trial point, check whether the tool nose can seat without pushing adjacent wire out of position. The operator should not need to twist the joint, pull fabric into the closure zone, or fire while the nose is only partly located. Record access failures as system failures; correcting them solely by raising tool pressure or changing the ring still requires another controlled test.

A practical trial includes enough repetitions to show normal variation on the actual workstation. The factory decides the sample quantity from its process risk and inspection plan. The record should show every missed feed, incomplete capture, double feed, damaged component, and rejected closure rather than reporting only the acceptable pieces.

Define What an Acceptable Closure Looks Like

Agree on acceptance before the test begins. A useful closure review asks:

  1. Did the ring capture every intended wire or attachment element?
  2. Did any fabric, cover, or unintended component enter the closure?
  3. Is the ring formed consistently around the joint without an open end that can snag adjacent material?
  4. Are the captured wires visibly damaged, displaced, or forced into an unintended position?
  5. Does the connection remain in its designed location after the agreed handling check?
  6. Can the result be inspected at production speed with the available lighting and access?

Photograph accepted and rejected examples from the same angle with the joint code visible. A single “golden sample” without the ring lot, tool ID, component sizes, and approval date is insufficient. The physical sample and the written record should point to each other.

Choose Material and Finish From the Real Exposure

The product record lists galvanized and stainless-steel ring options. Select the material from the finished product specification, storage and shipping conditions, and the materials present in the joint. A coating name alone cannot support a service-life promise.

Where appearance or corrosion resistance matters, request the exact material designation on the quotation and sample label. If the mattress design, packaging environment, or destination requirement changes, recheck the decision rather than assuming the previous ring remains acceptable.

Put the Approved System on the Purchase Order

The purchase description should be detailed enough that receiving, production, and the supplier identify the same item.

Keep ring strips from different item codes physically separated at the workstation. Match the box label, production traveler, and tool setup before loading. If a ring, tool, wire diameter, joint stack, finish, or workstation access method changes, place the new combination back into trial status.

For a useful quotation, send the joint drawing, measured capture range, tool model, sample quantity, ring material requirement, monthly or order quantity, and photographs of the easiest and hardest access points. That evidence lets the supplier review a real mattress connection instead of guessing from an application label.
